Events – Walhalla Goldfields Railway

The November 2023 tour will be to Walhalla and Tyers Junction on the weekend of 25th and 26th of November.

On Saturday 25th we will meet at the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, Walhalla station no later than 10.30AM, with plenty of time to catch the 11AM return train to Thomson.  Provided we have 15 members or more participating, the cost per member is $20 each return.

We will ride the 11AM train and arrive back at Walhalla station around noon.  From there we will be given a guided tour of the rolling stock stored at the Walhalla station and be back before the 1PM train departs.  We are all required to wear high visibility vests provided by the Walhalla Goldfields Railway while in the Walhalla station yards.

You will need to bring lunch on the Saturday or take your chances finding something in Walhalla. There is the Goods Shed Cafe at the station, and cafes in the town so you should find something to satisfy your hunger.

After lunch we will re-group at the Long Tunnel Extended mine car park around 2.30PM, ready for a 3PM tour. Provided we have 15 members or more participating, the cost per member is $15 each.  We have been able to secure the services of a mining engineer as our guide and they will give us a more technical tour of the mine, which is not normally available to the public.

There are no more planned events following the conclusion of mine tour around 4PM and members are free to find their own accommodation and evening meal in Erica, Rawson or Walhalla.

Our agenda for Sunday 26th will involve a casual wander along the Tyers Valley Tramway from Christies bridge on the main line to Ingrams siding on the Eastern Branch of the tramway, around 1.6km. The walk will be on a down grade with a few level sections. There will be a large gathering of scouts at Caringal on that day which, unfortunately, will prevent us from exploring remains there. However, Mike McCarthy will be along to tell some of the story of the tramway and the locations we will pass.

To take advantage of the group booking rates for the railway and the mine visits we will need some certainty about numbers. For this reason, we are asking those interested to make a payment upfront of $35 to cover the booking costs.  If we don’t have paid commitments from sufficient numbers to achieve the group discount rates we may need to collect an additional $10 - $15 (depending on applicability of Concession prices to individuals) per person on the day. Hopefully numbers will be sufficient to avoid this.
